A High Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has sentenced Pastor Enoch Ebinyiam (also known as Enoch Gbinyiam) of the Winners Chapel Church to life imprisonment for raping a minor.
The minor, who is the daughter of a church member, was allegedly sedated and raped by the pastor in his vicarage.
The presiding judge, Hon. Justice O.I.O Ogunyemi, found the prosecution’s evidence convincing and ruled that the pastor’s actions breached Section 2 of the Gender-Based Violence (Prohibition) Law of 2019.
The prosecution team, led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Olawale Fapohunda, presented evidence that the pastor had carnal knowledge of the minor on several occasions, resulting in her pregnancy.
The court also heard that the pastor had confessed to committing the crime and apologized to the victim and her family.
In his judgment, Justice Ogunyemi held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced the pastor to life imprisonment.
The sentence is a significant milestone in the fight against sexual violence in Ekiti State, and it serves as a warning to perpetrators of such crimes that they will face the full weight of the law.
The victim’s family expressed relief and gratitude to the court for delivering justice, while the pastor’s counsel announced plans to appeal the judgment.
