The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has criticized the Federal Government’s plan to purchase new jets for the Nigerian Air Force, describing it as a clear disconnect from the plight of the Nigerian people.
Obi, in a statement on Monday, June 18, 2024, said the government’s decision to spend billions of naira on new jets when many Nigerians are struggling to survive is unacceptable.
“The news that the Federal Government is planning to spend billions of naira on new jets for the Nigerian Air Force is disturbing and shows a clear disconnect from the plight of the Nigerian people,” Obi said.
“At a time when many Nigerians are struggling to survive, when inflation is at an all-time high, and when the country is facing a severe economic crisis, it is unacceptable for the government to prioritize the purchase of new jets over the welfare of its citizens.”
Obi called on the government to prioritize the needs of the people, including education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, rather than wasting resources on luxury items.
“This is not the time for extravagance, but a time for prudent management of resources and prioritization of the needs of the people,” he added.
The former Governor of Anambra State lamented that the country’s resources are being mismanaged, emphasizing that the nation’s priorities are misplaced.
He pointed out that the funds allocated for the jets could be better utilized for projects that would benefit the masses, such as building hospitals, schools, and creating job opportunities.
“The government needs to get its priorities right and start working for the people, not just a select few,” Obi added.
The Labour Party presidential candidate’s remarks come as Nigeria faces economic challenges, with many citizens struggling to make ends meet.
The Federal Government’s decision to purchase new jets has drawn criticism from various quarters, with many Nigerians expressing their disapproval on social media.
The Nigerian Air Force has, however, defended the decision, stating that the new jets are necessary to enhance its operational capacity and combat security challenges in the country.
