President Bola Tinubu has said though there is poverty and suffering in the country, Nigeria is not the only nation facing such a situation, and cautioned criminals against vandalism of rail tracks, and stealing of electric cables, describing such acts as pure sabotage.
Reacting, the LP expressed disappointment with President Tinubu’s statement which it described as making mockery of Nigeria’s poor.

The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, have tackled the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, over his statement that Nigeria is the poorest country in West Africa.
Tinubu had made the statement during a campaign rally in Ogun State, where he claimed that Nigeria is the poorest country in West Africa, citing the country’s economic challenges and poverty rate.
Atiku, in a statement released by his campaign organization, said that Nigerians are not alone in poverty, citing the example of other West African countries like Burkina Faso, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, which also struggle with poverty.
He said, “While it is true that Nigeria is facing economic challenges, it is not the only country in West Africa facing similar challenges. Burkina Faso, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, among others, are also struggling with poverty and economic difficulties.”
Similarly, Peter Obi, in a tweet, said that Tinubu’s statement is a “false and misleading narrative” and that Nigeria has the potential to be a prosperous nation if led aright.
He said, “Nigeria is not the poorest country in West Africa. This is a false and misleading narrative. We have the potential to be a prosperous nation, with a strong economy and a high standard of living, if led aright.”
The two candidates criticized Tinubu for his statement, which they said is aimed at perpetuating a negative narrative about Nigeria and its people.

The party said, “It is disappointing that a leader of Tinubu’s stature would make a statement that makes mockery of Nigeria’s poor. Instead of perpetuating a negative narrative, he should be offering solutions to the country’s economic challenges.”
The party added that Tinubu’s statement is a testament to his lack of understanding of the country’s economic challenges and his inability to proffer solutions.
