The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged state governors to implement the new national minimum wage, warning that failure to do so would perpetuate a state of resentment and misery among workers.
The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the call in a statement, noting that the recent increase in the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N57,000 was a product of rigorous negotiations between the government and labour.
Ajaero emphasized that the new wage is not a favour, but a right that workers have earned after years of sacrifice and dedication to the nation’s development.
He expressed concern that some governors are hesitant to implement the new wage, despite the obvious benefits it would bring to workers and the economy.
“The implementation of the new national minimum wage is not a choice, but a necessity. It is a matter of justice, equity, and fairness,” Ajaero said.
The NLC leader urged the governors to prioritize the welfare of workers, who are the backbone of the nation’s growth and development.
He warned that failure to implement the new minimum wage would lead to a state of resentment and misery among workers, which could have far-reaching consequences for the nation.
Ajaero also called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the matter, urging him to prevail on the governors to do the right thing by implementing the new minimum wage.
“We appeal to President Tinubu to use his good offices to persuade the governors to implement the new national minimum wage. This is the only way to retrieve Nigeria from the current state of resentment and misery,” Ajaero added.
The NLC president also threatened that workers would not hesitate to take industrial action if the governors fail to implement the new minimum wage.
“We will not hesitate to take industrial action if the governors fail to implement the new national minimum wage. We will mobilize workers across the country to protest this injustice,” Ajaero warned.
