Enugu Rangers International Football Club have been crowned champions of the Nigerian Premier Football League for the 2023/2024 season.

The team achieved this feat after a 2-0 victory over Bendel Insurance at the Cathedral in Enugu, with a goal in each half from Kenechukwu Agu and Chidiebere Nwobodo, sealing a 2-0 victory.

This is the club’s eighth NPFL title in total, and their first since 2016. They will represent Nigeria at the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League.

The victory came after Rangers secured the title the previous matchday at their iconic Cathedral stadium in Enugu, meaning this final day’s victory was merely the icing on the cake for the jubilant players and supporters.

Rangers secured the title after Remo Stars and Enyimba, the only teams that could have theoretically caught up with them, lost to Sunshine Stars and Sporting Lagos respectively.

The Enugu-based team finished the season with 72 points from 38 matches, 10 points clear of second-placed Remo Stars.

Rangers’ coach, Abdul Maikaba, praised his players for their hard work and dedication throughout the season. “This title is a testament to the team’s resilience and determination. We faced many challenges along the way, but we never gave up,” he said.

The club’s captain, Amobi Ezeakwu, also expressed his joy at winning the title. “This is a dream come true for me and my teammates. We are thrilled to have brought joy to our fans and the entire state of Enugu,” he said.

The state governor, Peter Mbah, congratulated the team on their victory, promising to reward them with a cash prize of N150 million. “This is a well-deserved victory for Rangers International. We are proud of their achievement and will continue to support them in their future endeavors,” he said.

The victory parade is scheduled to take place on Friday, with the team expected to parade the trophy through the streets of Enugu, amidst cheers and celebrations from their teeming fans.

This victory marks a return to the top for Rangers International, one of Nigeria’s most successful and beloved football clubs.
