President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged his administration’s support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to combat drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.
Tinubu spoke at the State House in Abuja during a courtesy visit from the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Mohamed Buba Marwa.
The President emphasized the need for collective efforts to address the drug menace, which he described as a “threat to national security and public health.”
He commended Marwa’s leadership and the NDLEA’s recent successes in intercepting drug shipments and arresting traffickers.
Tinubu assured the NDLEA of his administration’s commitment to providing the necessary resources and support to enhance the agency’s operations and capacity building.
Marwa briefed the President on the NDLEA’s achievements and challenges, including the recent seizure of over 200 million illicit drugs and the arrest of high-profile drug barons.
He also solicited the President’s support for the NDLEA’s quest to establish a drug test kit for all students in tertiary institutions and a national drug control master plan.
The President and the NDLEA chief also discussed strategies to tackle drug-related issues, including the need for public awareness campaigns and collaboration with international partners.
President Tinubu assured the NDLEA chairman that his administration would continue to prioritize the fight against drug abuse and trafficking, recognizing the agency’s vital role in tackling the menace.
He also promised to work with the National Assembly to ensure the passage of the Drug Control Bill, which aims to strengthen the legal framework for combating drug-related offenses.
Marwa expressed gratitude for the President’s support and commended his commitment to the anti-drug campaign. He emphasized the need for sustained collaboration between the NDLEA and other security agencies to achieve significant milestones in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
The NDLEA chairman also presented the President with a report on the agency’s achievements and challenges, including the recent seizure of over 200 million illicit drugs and the arrest of high-profile drug barons.
The meeting was attended by top government officials, including the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, the Minister of Health, and the Director General of the National Council on Drug Abuse.
