The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged organizers of the planned August 1 nationwide protest to shelve their demand for President Bola Tinubu to scrap the 1999 Constitution, describing it as a tall order. The ruling party made this known after a closed-door meeting with the Forum of APC State Chairmen to discuss the modalities of the proposed protest at the national secretariat in Abuja on Friday.
According to the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, President Tinubu alone does not have the power to dump the 1999 Constitution. He stated that the constitutional amendments in Nigeria cannot be done by presidential fiat, but require four-fifths of the members of the National Assembly and two-thirds of the State Assembly to be able to do so.
Basiru also frowned at the push to have the Senate sacked, leaving only the House of Representatives to take care of the business of lawmaking, describing it as a contradiction. He urged Nigerians to be alive to the fact that the government will not sit and allow violence to be meted on hapless citizens of the country.
The APC also described the title of the protest, #EndBadGovernance, as a signal that the organizers are not protesting but want to carry out a revolution, which is not something to be done through protests and comes with immense violence.
