Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a 1-0 loss to Spain on Sunday, leaving their Olympic hopes in jeopardy. The team must now beat Japan in their final group game to stand a chance of qualifying as one of the best losers in the football event of the ongoing Olympics in Paris.

The Super Falcons lacked a finisher to convert the few chances they created and paid for it when Spain scored directly from a free-kick in the last minutes of the game. This loss follows a similar 1-0 defeat to Brazil in their opening game.

Coach Randy Waldrum’s side is now rooted to the bottom of Group C. In the other group game, Japan came from behind to beat Brazil 2-1 with a stunning 96th-minute winner from Momoko Tanikawa. Japan and Brazil are now level on three points after two matches.

The Super Falcons’ loss means they must win their final game against Japan to have any chance of advancing to the next stage. The team’s Olympic hopes are hanging by a thread after two disappointing losses.

The match against Spain saw Nigeria’s forward, Asisat Oshoala, fight for the ball with Spain’s defender, Laia Aleixandri, but the team couldn’t capitalize on the few chances they created.

The Super Falcons will now face Japan in their final group game, needing a win to stand a chance of qualifying for the next stage as one of the best losers.
