The Presidency has stated that Nigerians have the constitutional right to peaceful protest, and no one can deny them this right. This declaration comes amidst calls for protests against hardship in the country, with some individuals and groups expressing concerns that the protests might be hijacked by violent people.

The Federal Government has also taken steps to placate youths in the country, offering jobs and grants to discourage them from participating in the protests. However, civil society organizations have reaffirmed the fundamental right to peaceful protest, stating that it is a cornerstone of democratic society.

The Inspector-General of Police has summoned the legal adviser to the organizers of the protest, Mr. Ebun Olu-Olu-Adegboruwa, to a meeting at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The protest, scheduled for August 1, aims to address issues such as the cost of living, insecurity, and electoral reform.

The Nigerian Bar Association has called for dialogue and urged the Federal Government and protest organizers to come together for a frank discussion on the issues. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has blamed the planned protest on politicians who lost the 2023 elections, alleging that they are intent on coming to power through the back door.

The Minister of Education has directed all universities to make arrangements for the security and safety of staff, students, and property ahead of the protest. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has also embarked on a series of meetings to mobilize stakeholders against joining the planned strike.

The Southwest Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress has appealed to Nigerians to be patient with the present administration, stating that the present hardship will soon give way to meaningful livelihood for all.
