Despite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s call to suspend further protests, demonstrators in Lagos and Osun states resumed peaceful protests against hardship and bad governance. The protests, which began on August 1, have continued despite the President’s acknowledgement of the protesters’ concerns and his urge for dialogue.
In Lagos, protesters converged on the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, while in Osun State, they gathered at the Freedom Park in Osogbo. The protesters criticized President Tinubu’s broadcast, saying he “cannot offer an olive branch while holding a dagger to our throat.”
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State commended the protesters for calling off their demonstration following the President’s broadcast, while Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State assured the protesters of quality governance and promised to address their concerns.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State begged for patience and understanding, saying the current administration needs time and support for the impact of economic policies to be felt. Senator Ayo Akinyelure assured that Nigerians will soon smile again under President Tinubu’s leadership.
The protests have continued, with demonstrators demanding an end to bad governance and improved economic conditions.
