Nigerians are concerned over the rising spate of killing for ritual purposes, with several cases reported across the country. The evil activities of ritual killers have gone beyond kidnapping people from their homes, on the road, or while in transit to hospitals, where there have been recorded demands for day-old babies. Some nurses are believed to be involved in the trade, stealing newborn babies soon after delivery and making the mothers believe their babies are stillborn.
Recently, a female graduate of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Awesu Mojisola Morufat, was killed and allegedly used for money ritual. The police have arrested two suspects, including a self-proclaimed cleric and his son, in connection with the crime.
In another case, a 31-year-old man was caught with eight human skulls and fresh human flesh in Ondo State. Additionally, a fruit seller was arrested for killing five people, including his intimate friend and cousin, for ritual purposes.
Islamic cleric Ustaz Jamiu Aro attributed the rise in ritual killings to the desire for wealth and power, stating that people are looking for shortcuts to achieve their goals. He also blamed the constitution for allowing ritual killers to go scot-free due to the difficulty in securing convictions.
Pastor Hezekiah Olujobi, Director of Centre for Justice, Mercy and Reconciliation, agreed that ritual killing seems to be on the increase because people are looking for power and wealth at all costs through demonic means. He advised those involved in the act to seek the face of God rather than the things of this world.
Security expert Dr Davidson Akhimien suggested that security education should be part of the curriculum from primary to university levels to make Nigerians security-conscious. He also advised individuals to be cautious when using cab services and hotels.
Consultant Psychologist Dr Leonard Okonkwo attributed the increase in ritual killings to the celebration of wealth without considering the means of acquiring it. He stated that people are lured into the act and later live in denial, experiencing self-guilt, and becoming callous and conscienceless.
