…As Over 100 Widows Receive Free Healthcare Cards
In a bid to empower and transform the lives of twin siblings after the tragic loss of their mother, Barods Empowerment Foundation has provided intensive training and equipments to help them achieve their dreams.
The foundation also extended its support to over 100 widows, providing them with free healthcare cards at an event tagged “Widows’ Care and Twin Vocational empowerment program held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Our correspondent reports that the twins, Taiwo and Kehinde Shonekan were identified by the Foundation as deserving recipients of support, recognizing their potential and interest in Hairdressing and Fashion Design, the foundation enrolled them in vocational training programs in their chosen trades.
The foundation who equally paid their graduation fees, provided them with the necessary equipments and tools to help them establish their chosen businesses.
The foundation executive director, Adekunle Aliu Banjo who spoke at the event virtually, said the foundation kind gesture was borne out of goodwill, therefore encouraged the beneficiaries to engage, inspired, and also contribute to the journey of empowerment.
While addressing journalists, the CEO of Barods Global Limited and co-founder of the Barods Empowerment Foundation, Mr Babatunde Denton revealed that “widows are particularly vulnerable to health challenges, therefore prompted decision of the foundation to empower them to alleviate their suffering.
According to him “the last time we had a program for widows—100 widows during the Ramadan and Easter period, we provided them with food packs and other essentials. During our interactions with some of the widows, we discovered that they face significant challenges regarding healthcare, which, as we know, is a major concern in Nigeria today. For instance, purchasing malaria and typhoid drugs can cost anywhere from ₦15,000 to ₦20,000 at a pharmacy.
In light of these challenges, we decided that our next program for the widows would focus on healthcare, in addition to providing food packs and other support. Many of these women simply need medical advice—things like checking their blood pressure, blood sugar, and other small but vital health checks that can keep them in good health.”
“As the saying goes, “health is wealth.” When you’re healthy, you have the strength to hustle, do your daily job, and provide for your family. And we all know that women are the backbone, the brain, and the engine room behind every family., Mr Denton said.
Also speaking “The Executive Secretary for Barods Empowerment Foundation, Ajibola Akinwande, equally explained the foundation’s efforts in identifying and supporting the twins, providing them with intensive training and equipment to establish their own businesses.
His words “We believe in the words of Martin Luther King, who said that our lives are not sufficiently meaningful until the day we succeed as instruments of positive change for the greater good of humanity. It is in this spirit that we discovered and identified a particular set of twins who unfortunately loss their mother and encountered challenges in continuing their vocational training.”
“Ever since they loss their mom, they’ve been staying with their respective bosses. However, continuing in their trade has become very difficult for them.”
“What the foundation did was to identify with them. With the approval of their local bosses, we sent them outside their neighborhood for further intensive training, which exposed them to much more in their chosen trade. Following this, we also provided them with additional training in emotional intelligence, business management, and other skills necessary for survival in the world at large.”
“Today is the grand finale, where we are celebrating their freedom in collaboration with their bosses. The foundation sponsored their freedom fee and also went further to procure all the equipment they will need to sustain themselves for life. This is the feat that the foundation has achieved today.”
“Our message to them is to put to use what they’ve learned, both in terms of their trade and the intellectual skills and training they have acquired through us. They should embrace the values of hard work, integrity, patience, and persistence in their work. Now that they are on their own, they should be resilient and continue working hard toward their own financial freedom. We hope they will become better people who can add value to their communities.”
Akinwande who also spoke on the widows empowerment said “we have reached out to about 100 widows. The medical card we provided allows them to access medical care at designated pharmacies. Every month, they can also receive free diagnostic tests at the pharmacy to monitor their health and other medical needs and status.”
Our correspondent gathered that the Foundation partnered with Nimble Health to provide free medical cards to widows, enabling them to access a range of medical services at local pharmacies, with the services such as typhoid tests and treatment, treatment of fever and pains, treatment of cough and cold, teatment of stomach upsets, Allergies, blood pressure and sugar tests.
