LP Crisis: NLC Backs Obi, Otti’s 29-Man Caretaker Committee

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared support for the 29-man caretaker committee established by Abia Governor Alex Otti, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and party stakeholders.

The NLC’s Deputy President of the Political Commission, Prof Theophilus Ndubuaku, disclosed this in an interview with National Reports.

Ndubuaku stated:

“We applaud the giant stride being made, which we believe will end the crisis in the Labour Party and reposition it to play the role that the founding fathers had for the party.”

The caretaker committee, led by Nenadi Usman, was set up to resolve the lingering leadership crisis in the party.

However, the National Chairman of the LP, Julius Abure, and his loyalists have rejected the committee, describing it as null and void.

Abure’s camp claims that Otti lacks the authority to oversee the meeting that established the caretaker committee.

Ndubuaku disagreed, saying:

“Peter Obi consulted virtually every stakeholder. The choice of Nenadi Usman is a round peg in a round hole. She is someone with a track record and capacity and won’t look at anybody’s face.”

The NLC official promised that the commission would continue to make inputs, especially in mobilizing workers for the Labour Party.

He expressed optimism that there wouldn’t be friction between the committee and the National Transition Committee.

Abure’s loyalists have vowed not to be intimidated, stating:

“Obi and Otti lack the power to set up a caretaker committee to run the affairs of the party. It is not in tandem with our party constitution and whatever they say or do is not binding on us.”
