Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has disclosed plans to introduce a price control mechanism in the state to ensure affordability of food items.
Abiodun made this known during a meeting with market leaders, led by the Iyaloja General, Yemisi Abass, at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Thursday.
The governor announced the establishment of the Gateway Trading Company, formerly known as the Bulk Purchasing Company, to purchase food items in bulk and resell them at affordable prices.
“Gateway Trading will assist in bringing food items to our teeming public at prices significantly below what they can obtain when they go to the market themselves,” he said.
Abiodun also banned all forms of levies in markets, except for development and environmental levies, which are meant for market development.
A market enforcement task force will be established to stamp out coercion, intimidation, and illegal levies.
“Any person found collecting money illegally by way of tolls will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law,” Abiodun warned.
Additionally, the governor promised support for farmers’ associations through grants, loans, and farm implements.
In her remarks, Iyaloja General Yemisi Abass commended Governor Abiodun for engaging market leaders to discuss ways to make life more bearable for the people.
