Controversy has erupted between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery over the supply volume of premium motor spirit (petrol). According to Vanguard’s findings, NNPCL claims Dangote cannot supply enough petrol, but Dangote refutes this, stating it has delivered 111 million liters within three days, with loading ongoing [1).
NNPCL initially said Dangote could only deliver 16.8 million liters out of the agreed 25 million liters. However, Dangote’s delivery figure surpasses both its promised amount and the national daily demand of over 40 million liters. This raises questions about the need for further petrol importation.
Despite this, Vanguard reports that NNPCL has intensified imports, with over 135 million liters arriving in the country within three weeks from September 27, 2024. This sudden excess supply follows a severe petrol shortage that led to price hikes.
Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer of Dangote Refinery, confirmed the delivery, stating, “We have already loaded 111 million liters of petrol, and the exercise is ongoing. We are refining and have no reason not to load.” ¹
Adedapo Segun, Executive Vice-President, Downstream at NNPC, attributed the lack of petrol importation by other marketers to unfavorable market conditions. He explained that marketers prefer not to import petrol due to potential losses, opting instead for automotive gas oil (AGO) and aviation turbine kerosene (ATK).
Dr. Muda Yusuf, CEO of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), criticized the recent petrol price increase, urging the government to provide welfare packages to alleviate citizens’ suffering.
The dispute highlights the complexities in Nigeria’s petroleum market, with NNPCL and Dangote Refinery at odds over supply volumes and pricing.
