Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to leading Nigeria out of its current challenges.
Fagbemi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), spoke at the Abuja Social Media Summit on Wednesday, emphasizing the various reforms and policy directions being introduced by the Federal Government to improve citizens’ lives.
He stated:
“President Bola Tinubu is committed to leading the country out of the woods. The various reforms and policy directions being introduced in all strata of national life are pointers to the sincerity of the Federal Government to make life more bearable for the citizens.”
Fagbemi called for Nigerians’ support for the Federal Government’s policy decisions, emphasizing the need for collective effort to transform the country.
“To enable the government achieve the desired better Nigeria, all hands must be on deck in efforts to transform the country into a greater nation devoid of bickering.”
The AGF highlighted the importance of social media in national development, citing its potential to:
– Promote economic growth
– Improve governance
– Foster societal progress
– Enhance civic engagement
Fagbemi cautioned against the misuse of social media, urging Nigerians to demonstrate responsible citizenship and avoid spreading misinformation.
“We must realize the need for us to at all times demonstrate responsible citizenship while this government has continued to provide responsible leadership through many social safety nets it has provided over time.”
He emphasized the importance of freedom of speech, acknowledging the government’s guarantee of this right.
“Social media platforms are buzzing in Nigeria because the government has guaranteed the freedom of speech. They have also become veritable tools that our teeming youths are using to showcase their talents and also to make money.”
Fagbemi warned against using social media to infringe on others’ rights or spread harmful information.
“No individual should use his freedom of speech on social media to infringe upon the rights of another as it is fast becoming the order of the day.”
He concluded by commending the summit’s organizers and challenging stakeholders and participants to promote national unity and development.
Nigeria’s efforts to harness social media for national development are part of a broader global trend. Examples of successful initiatives include:
– India’s Digital India program
– South Korea’s e-Government initiative
– Estonia’s digital governance model
– Kenya’s M-Pesa mobile payment system
– Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative
Nigeria’s National Orientation Agency (NOA) is also working to promote national unity and development through social media.
Fagbemi’s remarks come amidst growing concerns about Nigeria’s economic and social challenges. Human rights activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi has predicted a revolution in Nigeria, stating that “a storm is coming”.
