The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied reports that Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi State, is in its custody.
The Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, Ohiare Michael, had earlier stated that Bello honored the EFCC’s invitation on Wednesday, accompanied by high-profile Nigerians.
However, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale countered this claim, stating:
“Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is incorrect. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody.”
“Bello, already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.”
The EFCC had previously declared Bello wanted following failed attempts to arrest him over alleged money laundering totaling N80 billion.
This development comes amidst other high-profile cases, including the N400 million drug fraud allegations and the ICPC’s investigation into Fayemi’s aides.
Meanwhile, Nigerians have expressed dissatisfaction with the launch of the ‘OneNigeriaUnityFabric’ by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, citing the country’s current economic hardship.
The EFCC’s stance on Bello’s status remains firm, emphasizing that he is wanted and not in their custody.
