The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has authorized major petroleum marketers to begin lifting premium motor spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, from Dangote Petroleum Refinery. This move is part of the existing agreement between NNPCL and the refinery, which initially stated that NNPCL would be the sole distributor of the refinery’s petrol.
The first batch of the consignment, totaling 16.8 million liters, was lifted by NNPCL’s retail entity. Vanguard findings revealed that some major marketers, including 11 Plc, have already lifted the product for distribution to their outlets in Lagos and other parts of the nation.
A marketer, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that major marketers are lifting from the Dangote Refinery under the NNPC arrangement. However, independent marketers were not included in this modified arrangement.
Alhaji Abubakar Garima, National President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), stated that only NNPCL has access to Dangote fuel, and they discharge the bulk of the products to their retail outlets. Independent marketers are waiting for NNPCL to provide the new price of petroleum products to lift from them.
Independent marketers are considering importing petrol to compete with NNPC and Dangote. Chief Chinedu Ukadike, IPMAN’s Public Relations Officer, emphasized that they want Dangote to sell to them at the same price as NNPC. They also plan to import petrol to sustain their business and are asking the Federal Government to hand over the Port Harcourt Refinery to independent marketers.
Dr. Muda Yusuf, CEO of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), commented that transparency is essential in the new product lifting arrangement. He emphasized the need for more information on the framework, pricing, and NNPC’s involvement.
As of yesterday, many filling stations in Abuja and Lagos remained locked up, four days after NNPC began loading petrol from Dangote Refinery.
