The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are locked in a tight race in the Edo State 2024 governorship election.
As of press time, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had uploaded about 95% of the 4,519 polling units’ results on its Result Viewing (IReV) portal.
Results from the IReV portal showed the PDP leading, with the APC in hot pursuit. The Labour Party (LP) trailed behind.
Leaders of the PDP and APC claimed to be leading based on results announced so far from the polling units.
The election was largely peaceful, with impressive voter turnout despite heavy downpours in many parts of the state.
Some political heavyweights, including Governor Godwin Obaseki, PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo, and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, won their polling units.
However, LP candidate Olumide Akpata lost his polling unit to Ighodalo.
The APC declared it was leading comfortably, while the PDP urged the APC to respect the people’s will.
INEC granted a three-hour extension to accommodate voters in areas with delayed commencement of voting.
The police arrested suspected thugs with guns and vote-buyers in various parts of the state.
