In the aftermath of the Edo State governorship election, Governor Godwin Obaseki has urged citizens to remain calm and peaceful, despite the declaration of Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Obaseki made this call in a broadcast, where he also hinted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would seek resolution for the alleged disregard of law and process through democratic means. The APC won with 291,667 votes, while the PDP’s Asue Ighodalo polled 247,274 vote.
Governor Obaseki emphasized the importance of peace and justice, stating that they will ultimately prevail. He acknowledged the feelings of vexation and violation among Edo citizens but encouraged them to refrain from violence and destruction of property.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Okpebholo on his victory, praising the people’s support for the APC. Tinubu advised Okpebholo to unite the people of Edo State and collaborate with his political rivals for the state’s development.
The election results showed Okpebholo leading in 11 out of 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs), with the PDP agent from Oredo LGA contesting the results due to alleged tampering.
