Female Suspect Confesses: “I Started Fake Money Business After My Husband Left Me”

Osogbo – A 30-year-old woman, Rebecca Ako, has revealed that she ventured into counterfeit currency dealings after her husband divorced her, leaving her in need of financial support.

Rebecca, who was paraded at the Osun Amotekun Corps headquarters in Osogbo on Tuesday, explained that her former neighbor, Mrs. Elizabeth, now residing in Abuja, introduced her to the fake money business.

According to Rebecca:

“There is a woman I used to live with when my husband left me; the woman later left for Abuja and she called me one day and introduced me to the fake money business. She said I could spend it, though she told me it was fake money.”

Rebecca disclosed that she would return N50,000 genuine money for every N100,000 given to her by her employer, Mrs. Elizabeth.

“I give her N50,000 of original money for every N100,000 of fake money she gives me. That’s how I used it, and I was caught.”

Rebecca, a resident of Owena and native of Benue State, revealed that Mrs. Elizabeth had supplied her with fake currency twice:

“She gave me N100,000 in December last year and later gave me another N100,000 this year.”

Amotekun Corps Commandant, Adekunle Omoyele, stated that Rebecca was arrested on September 16, 2024, at Sabo Market in Ilesa while attempting to use a fake N1,000 denomination to purchase items from innocent traders.

The suspect confessed that Mrs. Elizabeth in Abuja was the source of the fake currency, and the matter is still under investigation.

This development highlights the need for increased vigilance and collaboration between law enforcement agencies to combat counterfeit activities in Nigeria.
