The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that it has restored bulk power supply to 90% of its substations following the national grid’s sixth collapse this year.
The grid collapsed on Monday at 6:18 p.m., causing widespread darkness across the country. However, the TCN swiftly commenced recovery efforts, utilizing Azura power station to provide the blackstart.
Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s Public Affairs General Manager, disclosed that power generation dropped significantly during the collapse, from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 p.m. to 0.00GW by 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Mbah stated, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria hereby states that the national grid experienced a partial disturbance, on Monday, 14th October 2024 at about 6:48 p.m. and notes that efforts to fully recover the grid are still ongoing.”
_RESTORATION UPDATE_
– Bulk power availability has been restored to about 90% of TCN’s substations nationwide.
– Supply has been restored to the Abuja axis and other major distribution load centers nationwide.
– The partial disturbance did not affect the Ibom Gas generating station, which continued to supply areas in the South Southern part of the country.
The TCN has assured that investigation into the cause of the incident will be carried out as soon as the grid is fully restored.
Electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory have expressed frustration over the frequent grid collapses, describing them as an embarrassment to the country.
