In a bid to promote inclusivity and empowerment, the Rotary Clubs of Abeokuta Royal has organised a vocational training for over 100 special students at St. Peters College Olomore, Abeokuta the Ogun State capital.
The training according to the President of the Club, Rotarian Adetonike Ganiyat Kazeem said the initiative was part of the club’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and supporting the most vulnerable members of the society
Rotarian Kazeem revealed that the three-months program will provide training in various skills such as Tie and Dye, shoemaking, soap production, and bag-making (such as school bags and lunch bags) adding that by January, the students will graduate from the program and will be issued with certificate.
She explained that the Rotary Clubs of Abeokuta Royal is also determined to provide the special students with empowerment tools and resources after their post ventures graduation.
While speaking on the rationale behind the initiative, Rotarian Kazeem said “Our club felt a strong need to support these students, as society often focuses on non-special needs children, leaving these remarkable individuals behind.”
“They are often overlooked by both government initiatives and community efforts, but we see their potential and know they deserve the same opportunities. This program aims to bring out their hidden talents, empower them, and give them valuable skills they can use in the future.”
“Over the next three months, we will provide training in Tie and Dye, shoemaking, soap production, and bag-making (such as school bags and lunch bags). By January, inshallah, they will graduate from this program.”
“Our club will also provide them with empowerment tools and resources, so they can start their own ventures post-graduation. On graduation day, we will host an exhibition, allowing everyone to see the impressive work these students have accomplished and showcase the quality of their skills.”
“We are excited to start on the 15th of this month, with experts from various fields joining us. These specialists will provide high-quality training in shoemaking, Tie and Dye, soap production, and more, empowering these students to achieve success in society.”
“As a humanitarian organization, Rotary has a monthly focus for each of our service areas. January, designated as the vocational month, is ideal for this project, and by then, our students will be ready to showcase their hard work and newfound skills.”
She therefore encouraged the students to ensure that they make use of the knowledge and embrace it judiciously.
Her words “I encouraged the students, reminding them that this is a rare and valuable opportunity. They need to embrace it fully, to bring out the best in themselves and show society their true potential. Their enthusiasm and gratitude have already been incredibly heartwarming.
“For graduation, we will welcome both Rotarians and non-Rotarians to see these students’ achievements and support them by purchasing their creations. Additionally, we seek partnerships with individuals, organizations, and government bodies to help fund and expand this initiative. Rotary Club of Abeokuta Royal is committed to this cause, and with your support, we can make an even greater impact”.
She therefore urged government at all levels on needs to support and uplift humanity saying that its not a call for help but an invitation to join in building a better future for special students.
On his parts, the Chair Coordinator for Vocational Training,
Rotarian Ogunmuyiwa Oluwayemi, hinted that the training initiative was envisioned by the club President, Rotarian Adetonike Kazeem, saying that it targeted over 100 special students to benefit from the training.
Rotarian Oluwayemi added that the first batch of 100 participants will undergo a structured, three-month training program, supported by a dedicated monitoring team, this team according to him, along with the facilitator, will regularly supervise and guide the students.
His words “Afer the training, the club aim to further support the participants in two main ways, First, we plan to integrate them into the Interact Club, allowing them to experience the same fellowship and opportunities we enjoy in Rotary.”
“Secondly, we will empower them by providing resources and follow-up support. Our commitment doesn’t end with the training – we’ll monitor their progress, provide guidance, and promote the products they create.”
“Upon completion, each participant, along with their facilitators and teachers, will receive a certificate of participation to recognize their achievements.”
He therefore advised the participants to approach the program with passion and commitment, saying that “this opportunity is a stepping stone to a brighter future; take it seriously, and apply what you learn to improve and grow.”
In their separate remarks, both the students and their class teacher Mrs Emmanuella expressed their gratitude to the Rotary Clubs of Abeokuta Royal for given them a sense of belonging.
According to them “We feel incredibly delighted that the Rotarians have brought this initiative to our school. It’s a wonderful opportunity that will allow our students to feel included, giving them a sense of belonging and reminding them that they are valued and loved.”
“We are truly grateful, and we pray that God continues to empower and support you in achieving your mission.”
