The Ogun State government has collaborated with the Society for Family Health (SFH) to train healthcare providers on self-injectable contraceptives. This initiative aims to address the rise in maternal mortality due to unintended pregnancies.
The training, themed “Empathy Based Counselling for Self-Injection-for-Choice State Training-of-Trainers,” was held in Abeokuta, the state capital, as part of SFH’s Delivering Innovation In Self-Care (DISC 2.0) project.
Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Healthcare Board, emphasized that the training supports women’s sexual and reproductive health through self-care contraceptives. He noted that most women lack knowledge on self-care contraceptive methods.
The Abiodun-led administration is committed to enhancing workers’ productivity through training and retraining. Healthcare providers are encouraged to utilize the DISC 2.0 project as an empowerment tool to educate women on various contraceptive methods.
Mrs. Jennifer Adebambo, Country Manager for Partnership and Collaboration at SFH, praised the state government’s commitment to reproductive health. Ogun has been selected for the second phase of the DISC 2.0 project, focusing on training healthcare providers on the newly approved self-injectable contraceptive, Depot MedroxyProgesterone Acetate-Subcutaneous (DMPCA-SC).
The goal is to improve women’s access to quality family planning services through self-administered contraceptives, preventing unplanned pregnancies among women of reproductive age.
Mrs. Bushirat Adelani, representing the participants, appreciated the organizers for the capacity-building initiative and promised to cascade the training in their respective local government areas.
