The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has stated that having multiple power grids in each region and state would end incessant grid collapses. He made this known on Wednesday during the unveiling of Hexing Livoltek, an electricity meter manufacturing company in Lekki, Lagos.
Adelabu emphasized that grid collapses are almost inevitable due to the deplorable state of Nigeria’s power infrastructure. He noted that decentralization would facilitate building regional grids.
“This Electricity Act has decentralized power. It enables state and local governments to participate in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. We rely on a single national grid; disturbances affect all 36 states. This shouldn’t be. We’ll move towards regional groups and state grids.
“Each grid will be shielded from others. Problems will only affect the state, not the entire nation. This is one impact of the Electricity Act,” he said.
Regarding grid collapse, Adelabu stressed that insufficient investment makes it inevitable.
“We talk about grid collapse. It’s almost inevitable with our infrastructure’s state. We manage it, but we need investments to overhaul it. There haven’t been grid collapses in four months, except Monday’s partial collapse. Our focus is improving response time.
Transformers are 60 years old; we can’t expect optimal performance. We need investments,” he explained.
Adelabu commended Hexing Livoltek for investing in Nigeria and creating jobs. The company’s CEO, Robert Liang, expressed optimism about advancing clean energy.
