President Tinubu Hails Oba of Benin at 71, 8th Coronation Anniversary

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, on his 71st birthday and the eighth anniversary of his coronation. In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the Oba’s leadership, highlighting his distinguished diplomatic career and commitment to preserving the Benin Kingdom’s cultural heritage.

“His courage and unwavering commitment to preserving his domain’s rich cultural heritage and tradition is commendable. The King’s relentless efforts and exploration of international networks to return priceless and timeless artefacts reflect his love for his people,” Tinubu said.

Since his coronation in 2016, Oba Ewuare II has promoted peace, understanding, and civility among his people. His diplomatic experience, gained from serving as Nigeria’s Ambassador to several countries, including Angola, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Italy, has contributed to his wise and gracious leadership.

Tinubu commended Oba Ewuare’s efforts to recover priceless artefacts, essential symbols of the Kingdom’s history and identity. These initiatives have fostered pride and connection among those sharing in the Benin Kingdom’s legacy.

The President also appreciated Oba Ewuare’s wise counsel to leaders and advocacy for participatory democracy and development. His promotion of civic responsibility and democratic participation inspires hope for a brighter future.

“May the Kingdom continue to prosper under the wise and benevolent leadership of Ewuare II, and may he and his family be blessed with health and happiness,” Tinubu said.

The Oba of Benin serves as a traditional ruler, peacemaker, and interpreter of customary laws. His functions include settling disputes, handling land matters, and consulting on family conflicts and community feuds. The Benin Kingdom represents a refined African political system that predated European colonialism.
