Suspected herders killed three people on Wednesday night in the Mbasombo community of Benue State’s Gwer East Local Government Area. The attack occurred less than 24 hours after a similar incident in Gwer West LG, where two people were killed.

According to a local resident, Abraham, the herders stormed the village under cover of darkness, firing indiscriminately and setting houses ablaze.

“Residents were already asleep when we heard sporadic gunshots. They opened fire indiscriminately and set many houses on fire, and the sudden attack made some people flee their homes into surrounding bushes and nearby villages. “Three corpses were recovered while several people sustained injury,” Abraham narrated.

The local government chairman, Timothy Adi, confirmed three deaths but said the situation was relatively calm.

“I’m in a meeting. The casualty figure is three; the situation now is relatively calm,” Adi said.

The Benue State Police Command spokesperson, Catherine Anene, also confirmed the incident.

“Incident confirmed,” Anene simply sent in a text message.
