The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two suspects linked to the brutal murder of a young woman whose body was set ablaze in the Gangare area of Mile 12, Lagos, on Saturday.
Initial reports stirred tension, with rumors suggesting the act was ethnically motivated. However, investigations later confirmed that the victim was from Nasarawa State and had been living with relatives near the Mile 12 canal, not from the South-West region as initially assumed.
According to police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the murder was premeditated and carried out by individuals allegedly hired by the woman’s estranged boyfriend, who is now on the run.
“The protracted dispute between her and her now-at-large boyfriend, who was determined to force her back into a relationship after their breakup, led to him conspiring with others to ambush her, kill her in cold blood, and set her body ablaze,” said Hundeyin.
The two suspects in custody reportedly confessed to the crime and are being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). Efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the fleeing boyfriend and other accomplices.
The police emphasized that there was no religious or blasphemy angle to the killing, nor any ethnic tensions in the area. Residents were urged to remain calm and avoid spreading false information that could incite panic.
“There is no tension or threat of reprisal attacks between any ethnic groups in Ketu, Mile 12, or any part of Lagos State,” the statement added.
The Lagos State Police Command assured the public of continued updates as investigations proceed and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety and justice for all.
