As the countdown begins for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, has assured fans that the team is fully focused and determined to give their best, despite recent distractions.
Ajibade made the remarks after scoring two goals in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Cameroon in a friendly match held at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta on Tuesday, June 3. The game marked the Falcons’ return to action after missing two international windows earlier this year.
This friendly was originally scheduled to be a two-legged fixture but was reduced to one game due to logistical challenges.
“Right now, the mood is positive. Even though there are back-and-forth distractions, we understand the responsibilities that lie ahead,” Ajibade said. “As players, it’s an honour to play for the nation. We’re positive, we’re excited, and we’re looking forward to the tournament. Of course, we will give our best as always.”
Nigeria, 11-time WAFCON champions, will compete in Group B at the tournament, which will run from July 5 to 26 in Morocco. They will face Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana in the group stage.
Ajibade, who recently left Atletico Madrid Women after four years, is also expected to announce a new club before the start of the 2025–26 season. During her time in Spain, she scored 40 goals in 139 appearances and won both the 2021 Spanish Super Cup and the 2023 Copa de la Reina.
The upcoming WAFCON will be a pivotal tournament not just for Nigeria’s title hopes, but also for Ajibade’s career trajectory as she enters a new chapter.
