The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja. The statement, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, congratulated Nigerians on the occasion, which marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” the Minister said.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo noted that the last 26 years of civil governance in Nigeria reflect the resilience, strength, and courage of the Nigerian people, as well as a renewed hope in the country’s democratic journey.
He reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration to the core principles of democracy, stressing the importance of the people’s freely expressed will in shaping Nigeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural systems.
“Democracy remains the most globally accepted system of government, and we must continue to protect, strengthen, and improve it,” he added.
June 12 is observed annually in Nigeria as Democracy Day in honour of the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the country’s history.
