The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced a ban on an unregistered batch of Tarivid (Ofloxacin 200mg), a commonly used antibacterial medication.
In a public alert numbered 21/2025, titled “Alert on the Report of Unregistered Tarivid (Ofloxacin 200mg) Found in Nigeria”, released on Tuesday, NAFDAC said the counterfeit drug was discovered on the shelf of a pharmacy located in Onipan, Shomolu Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Tarivid, manufactured by the global pharmaceutical company Sanofi, is a brand of Ofloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, kidneys, skin, and soft tissues.
The batch in question was reportedly manufactured in September 2023, with an expiry date of August 2028. However, NAFDAC confirmed that the product was unregistered and not authorized for circulation in Nigeria.
According to NAFDAC, a representative from Sanofi confirmed that the batch was initially produced for distribution in Pakistan. This claim was supported by a review conducted at Sanofi’s Anti-Falsified and Illicit Trafficking (AFIT) Central Laboratory.
NAFDAC noted that the presence of such unregistered products in the Nigerian market violates regulatory provisions, and their safety, quality, and efficacy cannot be guaranteed.
The agency also stated that the World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Surveillance and Monitoring System (GSMS) would be notified of the incident to flag the product internationally as a counterfeit medication.
