A man identified as Alexander Peter has been arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for allegedly killing his 71-year-old mother, Mrs. Atiny Peter, with a machete.
The tragic incident occurred in Ikot Inyang village, located in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The arrest was confirmed by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Azare, during a press briefing held on Thursday at the police headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo.
According to CP Azare, the suspect was apprehended on June 10, and investigations are currently ongoing to determine the motive behind the gruesome crime.
“The gruesome incident occurred in Ikot Inyang Village, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, where the suspect reportedly used the machete to hack his mother to death,” Azare said. He assured that the command is working to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident and establish the motive behind the heinous act.
The murder has left residents of the community in shock, as many struggle to come to terms with the violent killing of the elderly woman by her own son.
During the briefing, the CP also revealed that the police had arrested a total of 54 suspects across the state in the past six weeks for various criminal offences. Over 50 arms and rounds of ammunition were also recovered during this period.
