No fewer than 32 cows were killed by lightning during a heavy downpour on Saturday in the Osara, Obantoko area of Abeokuta, located in the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Baale of Osara, Wasiu Afolabi, confirmed the incident to reporters on Sunday. He explained that the tragedy occurred around noon during a torrential rainfall. According to Afolabi, the Fulani herders responsible for the cattle reported the incident to him at about 2:00 p.m.

“I was at home on Saturday when the Fulani herders, at about 2 p.m., came to report that lightning had killed 32 of their cows,” he said.

Upon visiting the site, Afolabi said he saw the lifeless animals in the area where the cows are usually kept before being taken out for grazing.

He noted that the incident had been reported to the Aregbe Police Division and the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo. A community meeting with the Fulani herders was also scheduled to discuss the way forward and to ensure the peace of the community was not disturbed.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed the incident in a WhatsApp message to The PUNCH.

“The Command is well aware. The incident was reported to the DPO of Aregbe Division at about 13:30 hours on June 21, 2025. He led a team to the scene. Thirty-two cows were struck dead when thunder and lightning occurred during a heavy downpour of rain,” Ogunlowo said.
