President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will today begin a two-nation diplomatic tour to Saint Lucia and Brazil as part of Nigeria’s efforts to enhance global partnerships and deepen relations within the Global South.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the first leg of the visit will take President Tinubu to the Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia. The visit is aimed at promoting cultural and economic ties under the African Union’s Sixth Region framework, which recognises the African diaspora as an essential component of Africa’s global engagement.
While in Saint Lucia, President Tinubu will hold bilateral meetings with Governor-General Cyril Errol Melchiades Charles and Prime Minister Philip Pierre. He will also address a joint session of the Saint Lucian Senate and House of Assembly at the William Jefferson Clinton Ballroom at Sandals Grande, Gros Islet. The session is expected to be attended by Heads of Government of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), top government officials, diplomats, members of the Nigerian community, and OECS Director-General Dr. Didacus Jules.
A high-level working luncheon with leaders of the OECS will be held to discuss topics such as economic cooperation, educational exchanges, infrastructure development, and strengthening cultural and institutional ties between Nigeria and Caribbean nations.
President Tinubu is also scheduled to visit the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in Castries, where he will interact with students and faculty to boost academic and research collaborations between Nigeria and the Caribbean.
“This visit underscores Nigeria’s growing commitment to engaging Caribbean nations more meaningfully, not only through traditional diplomacy but through people-to-people and institutional linkages that promote sustainable development and cultural heritage,” the statement said.
Following his engagements in Saint Lucia, President Tinubu will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 17th BRICS Summit, scheduled for July 6–7, 2025. The Nigerian leader was invited by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to attend the summit, following Nigeria’s recent elevation to partner country status within the BRICS framework—ranking above guest status but below full membership.
Currently, South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia are the only African nations with full BRICS membership.
The Rio summit, themed “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” will address issues such as financial governance reform, climate finance, trade, and digital transformation in developing economies.
President Tinubu is expected to engage with global leaders on key initiatives and proposals aimed at promoting inclusive growth and equitable development across the Global South.
He will be accompanied on the trip by a delegation of senior Nigerian government officials.
