Paris Saint-Germain cruised past Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami with a commanding 4-0 victory on Sunday to book a place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The match, played at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, saw European champions PSG dominate the MLS side led by Messi and his former Barcelona teammates—Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. Despite the star power of Miami, the French side’s superior quality proved decisive over the 90 minutes.
Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves scored a brace, while Tomas Aviles netted an own goal, and Achraf Hakimi added another for PSG in a first-half rout. Neves opened the scoring in the sixth minute, heading home unmarked from a Vitinha free-kick. He later doubled PSG’s lead after capitalizing on a mistake by Busquets near the Miami penalty area.
Just before halftime, PSG piled on the pressure. Aviles turned a Desire Doue cross into his own net to make it 3-0. Hakimi then scored PSG’s fourth, firing in a rebound after his initial shot hit the crossbar.
The game was largely dominated by PSG, leaving Miami struggling to connect with Messi, who had a quiet first half. Despite his frustrations, Messi nearly created a breakthrough early in the second half with a chipped pass to Suarez, but the Uruguayan failed to convert.
Messi had another chance from a free-kick late in the game, but his effort struck the wall. Despite a more organized performance in the second half, Inter Miami could not reduce the deficit.
Reacting after the match, Jordi Alba said, “We were the best team in our group, but obviously we were facing the best team in the world. We competed, especially in the second half, and created more chances and problems for PSG.”
PSG will now face either Bayern Munich or Flamengo in the quarter-finals scheduled for Saturday in Atlanta.
