Opinion: PDP Should Let Competence, Popularity Lead in Remo Federal Constituency Bye-Election

Following the recent announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the conduct of bye-elections across the country with the exception of some affected states the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leadership has remained largely silent. But this silence should not be mistaken for weakness or lack of direction. It is a calculated and intentional move, aimed at carefully weighing all available options before making a final decision.

As members and stakeholders of the PDP, especially in Remo Federal Constituency, we believe this is the right moment to speak clearly and appeal to the leadership of our great party. The upcoming bye-election presents a unique opportunity for PDP to regain its stronghold and reaffirm its presence in the area but only if the right decisions are made.

We strongly advise the party to consider four key qualities when choosing its candidate:

3. Capacity to Serve

4. Popularity Among the People

These qualities are not only essential to winning the election, but also to delivering good representation in the National Assembly. Unlike the ruling party, which is currently divided and confused over who to present as their candidate, the PDP must rise above internal politics and make a smart, people-centered choice.

It is well known that the PDP remains very popular in Remo Federal Constituency. In fact, there are many capable and qualified individuals within the party who are ready to serve. This makes it unnecessary and even dangerous to impose a single candidate on the people without going through proper democratic processes.

Imposing a sole candidate would go against the values of fairness, inclusion, and democracy that the PDP is known for. Instead, we call on the party to create a level playing field and allow all interested aspirants to contest openly. Let the best candidate emerge based on merit and public support.
