Members of the newly formed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections have explained their choice of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their political platform.
The spokesperson of the coalition, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this on Wednesday during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.
Abdullahi said the coalition’s choice of the ADC was based on the party’s openness to reform and its alignment with the coalition’s shared values and vision.
“When we started this journey, we had a list of options, parameters, and conditionalities—the kind of party we were looking for. Those from the APC said no, because the founding principles that led to the formation of the APC had been betrayed,” he said.
According to Abdullahi, while the ADC may not be a perfect fit, it presented a unique opportunity for reform. He also noted that the appointment of former Senate President David Mark as the interim national chairman of the party was due to his personality and the universal confidence people have in him.
Earlier on Wednesday, leaders of the coalition met at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where they officially adopted the ADC as their platform to challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 elections.
Among the prominent political figures at the meeting were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Labour Party’s Peter Obi; former governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi; and other stakeholders such as Dino Melaye, Dele Momodu, Solomon Dalung, Senator Gabriel Suswam, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, and retired Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
