Liverpool forward and Portugal international Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, popularly known as Diogo Jota, has died at the age of 28.
His sudden death has shocked the football world, coming just days after what appeared to be a high point in both his personal and professional life.
Spanish sports newspaper MARCA reported the incident on Thursday, confirming that Jota died at the scene of the accident.
Born on December 4, 1996, in Porto, Portugal, Jota rose through the football ranks with determination and flair, gaining respect across Europe for his explosive performances and versatility in attack.
The right-footed forward, who was also capable of playing as a left or right winger, started his professional career in Portugal before making his mark internationally.
Jota joined Liverpool FC on September 19, 2020, from Wolverhampton Wanderers and became a key part of Liverpool’s attacking line-up.
As of May 2025, his market value stood at €40 million, having peaked at €60 million in December 2021. He extended his Liverpool contract in August 2022, with the deal set to run until 2027.
Throughout his career, Jota made 398 appearances across major competitions, scoring 136 goals and providing 66 assists. He featured in 190 Premier League matches, scoring 63 goals and recording 24 assists.
He also showed his goal-scoring ability in other competitions, netting six times in the UEFA Champions League, nine times in the Europa League, and contributing in domestic cup matches.
Jota recently got married on June 28 to his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso.
