At least eight people lost their lives on Sunday in a road crash at Atura Bus Stop in the Badagry area of Lagos State, just two days after another fatal accident claimed ten lives in Ogun State.
Eight other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident, which involved a commercial bus and a truck.
According to a statement from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the accident involved a 16-seater Mazda commercial bus with number plate KJA 811 YF and a DAF truck with registration number T1 4636 LA.
“The tragic accident instantly claimed the lives of eight passengers, including the driver of the ill-fated bus and his conductor, casting a somber pall over the Badagry axis and leaving the community in profound mourning and collective grief,” Taofiq said.
He noted that emergency responders from the Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigerian Army successfully rescued eight surviving passengers, all of whom sustained injuries.
The spokesperson said the accident was caused by speeding, adding that the bodies of the deceased and the injured victims were taken to the Badagry General Hospital for treatment and further investigation.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the commercial bus lost control while navigating at a perilously high speed, leading to a catastrophic collision with the DAF truck,” he added.
General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, visited the scene of the accident to console the families of the victims and wish the injured passengers a quick recovery.
“This heart-wrenching incident is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for all road users to embrace caution,” Bakare-Oki said. “No journey should end in such tragedy. May the Almighty grant the deceased eternal rest and console those left behind.”
He warned commercial drivers and heavy-duty vehicle operators against excessive speeding and urged them to strictly adhere to road safety protocols and ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles to prevent such incidents.
Bakare-Oki also reiterated the agency’s commitment to shifting from conventional traffic regulation to a more comprehensive incident management approach.
