Gbajabiamila Welcomes ADC Coalition, Says Strong Opposition Vital For Democracy

The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, has welcomed the adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by a coalition of opposition leaders, describing it as a positive step for Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking on Saturday during the Local Government Area Councilorship and Chairmanship elections in Surulere, Lagos State, Gbajabiamila said the development could encourage broader political participation within the country’s multi-party system.

After casting his vote at Elizabeth Fowler Memorial Primary School, a designated polling unit in Surulere, Gbajabiamila emphasized the critical role of opposition parties in a democratic setting.

“There has to be some level of opposition in a democracy,” he told reporters. “A functioning democracy must accommodate opposition voices to avoid the risk of reverting to a one-party system.”

He noted that the strength of any democratic government lies in a vibrant and credible opposition capable of holding the ruling party accountable, adding that without such checks and balances, democracy could degenerate into authoritarianism and erode public trust.

While welcoming the emergence of the ADC-led coalition, Gbajabiamila expressed doubts about its future viability.

“For whatever the coalition is worth, I am not sure where it will go — that is, if it will go anywhere,” he said.

Nevertheless, he reiterated the importance of having alternative political voices, calling it essential for national progress and political maturity.

Gbajabiamila, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, also commended the peaceful conduct of the council elections in Surulere and urged Nigerians to actively engage in the democratic process.

He stressed that grassroots elections are vital for delivering good governance at the local level and urged all political actors to prioritize national interest over personal ambition.

“Regardless of party affiliations, we must promote unity and ensure that democracy thrives,” he added.
