Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the No. 20 shirt across all levels of the club in honour of Diogo Jota, following his tragic death in a car accident in Spain alongside his brother. This marks the first time in the club’s 133-year history that a squad number has been permanently retired.
Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals wearing the No. 20 shirt. He quickly became a fan favourite due to his energetic performances and key contributions, notably playing a vital role in Liverpool’s 2024–25 Premier League title triumph.
The club’s announcement confirmed that the number will no longer be worn by players in the men’s team, Liverpool Women, or any of the academy squads, symbolizing Jota’s enduring legacy at Anfield. A popular chant created by fans in his honour will also remain part of the club’s folklore.
Liverpool’s CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, described the decision as “a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.” He noted that the move was made in close consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family. “Retiring the number makes Jota’s legacy eternal at Liverpool, ensuring that the number 20 will forever be synonymous with the Portuguese forward’s pride, distinction and affection for the club,” Edwards stated.
Liverpool plans to continue honouring Jota’s memory in the coming weeks, including a special tribute during their upcoming pre-season friendly against Preston, featuring moments of silence and commemorative activities.
