The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has affirmed that he remains a member of the party despite forming a coalition with other opposition politicians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi clarified that he has not defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the platform adopted by the coalition, and maintained that all members of the Labour Party, including those in the National Assembly, are part of the coalition effort.
He made the statement on Friday during the flag-off of the campaign for the Labour Party’s candidate in the upcoming Anambra State governorship election, Dr. George Moghalu, and his running mate, Lady Ifeoma Okaro.
Addressing concerns about his political affiliation, Obi said, “I will start this conversation by clarifying some confusions making the rounds. I need to explain to you and it is very important that I clarify this because people are saying, ‘Oh! Obi is in ADC and also in the Labour Party.
“Let me put it categorically clear, I and the National Assembly members of the Labour Party are part of the coalition that have adopted ADC for the 2027 election and other parties will join us.
“But today, we are members of the Labour Party. If anybody asks you which party Peter Obi belongs to today, tell him Peter Obi is in Labour Party. If anybody asks you about the coalition, tell him, the coalition is for 2027.”
He further reiterated his intention to run for president in 2027, stating, “Everyone has the right to run for president; I won’t stop anyone. But if anyone asks, let them know I am in the race, and no one does it better than me.”
He said his presence at the rally was to officially launch the campaign for Dr. George Moghalu, the Labour Party’s candidate for the November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra State.
In his remarks, Moghalu promised to lead the state with the fear of God and ensure qualitative governance if elected. He stated, “Although my administration will ask people to pay tax, we will never unleash pestle-wielding touts on the good people of the state.
“Let us unite with purpose and resolve to shape a brighter and more inclusive Anambra. Together, we move forward — for the people, and with the people.”
Also speaking, the Labour Party chairman in Anambra State, Ugochukwu Emeh, said the rally was aimed at strengthening the party’s grassroots movement and reaffirming its commitment to equity, good governance, and people-focused leadership.
