Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has issued a firm and uncompromising statement regarding the ongoing transfer saga involving striker Viktor Gyökeres and interest from English Premier League side Arsenal.
Gyökeres failed to report for pre-season training once again, prompting Varandas to publicly address the situation and respond to Arsenal’s reported negotiation tactics.
“If they don’t want to pay for Viktor’s fair market value, well… here at Sporting we are all very comfortable with that for the next three years with Gyökeres staying,” Varandas said.
The Sporting president emphasized that the club would not bow to pressure from any party, asserting that no individual is above the club’s interests.
“This strategy is also making it more complicated for the player to leave because nobody here is above the interests of the club. Whoever they are,” he stated.
Varandas added that the club remains calm despite the situation, making it clear that any resolution will come on Sporting’s terms.
“We’re very calm, everything will be resolved with the market closing with a hefty fine and an apology to the group,” he concluded.
The Swedish striker, who has been a standout performer for Sporting, is under contract and reportedly has a release clause exceeding €100 million.
