Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for his departure.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku said the party had strayed from the foundational principles it once stood for, making it difficult for him to continue as a member.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku wrote. “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life. As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”
He continued, “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”
Atiku also expressed his appreciation to the party for the opportunities it had afforded him over the years and wished the PDP and its leadership success in the future.
Atiku served as Nigeria’s Vice President under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007. He was also the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 general elections, losing both contests—first to Muhammadu Buhari and later to the current President, Bola Tinubu.
The resignation marks a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape, especially given Atiku’s long-standing affiliation and role as one of the founding members of the PDP.
