Liverpool Target Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike After Isak Setback

Liverpool are preparing to rival Newcastle United in the pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, after being informed that their top target, Alexander Isak, is not available for transfer.

The Premier League champions have long admired Isak but were told by Newcastle that the Swedish forward is not for sale in this transfer window. Newcastle, who value Isak at a minimum of £150m, are determined to keep hold of their star striker, who still has three years remaining on his contract.

With Isak off the table, Liverpool have now turned their attention to 23-year-old Ekitike, who was the subject of a rejected £70m bid from Newcastle in the past 24 hours. Frankfurt are understood to value the French striker at around £85m and believe multiple clubs are willing to meet their valuation.

Newcastle held discussions with Ekitike’s representatives in Austria on Monday, continuing a long-standing interest in the player that dates back to 2022, when the Magpies attempted to sign him before he chose a move to Paris Saint-Germain. Frankfurt acquired him from PSG for £14m last summer.

Ekitike had an impressive 2024/25 campaign, scoring 22 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions and playing a key role in helping Frankfurt qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Other Premier League clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with the forward this summer, but the interest from Liverpool is expected to intensify competition for his signature.

While Arsenal have previously shown interest in Isak, they are now reportedly closing in on a deal for Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, effectively ending their pursuit.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have only made one major signing this summer, acquiring Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55m. With Isak remaining at St James’ Park, the Magpies are hoping to bolster their attack further with Ekitike, though Liverpool’s entry into the race has complicated their plans.

Sky Sports analysts have drawn comparisons between Ekitike and Isak, noting their stylistic similarities as shot-heavy forwards who also contribute assists. Ekitike is considered by some to be a striker with the potential to match or even surpass Isak’s level in the future.

The situation remains fluid, with Frankfurt aware of the growing interest and ready to capitalise on the bidding war. Both Liverpool and Newcastle are now in a delicate race, with each club viewing Ekitike as a key piece in their attacking plans for the upcoming season.
