Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has described his relationship with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as one of the greatest honours of his life.
In a heartfelt tribute following Buhari’s death, Gbajabiamila said the passing of the former leader was both a personal and national loss, leaving him with a deep sense of bereavement.
“It will forever be one of the great honours of my life that I got to know, work with and enjoy the friendship of Muhammadu Buhari,” he wrote.

Gbajabiamila praised the late President’s steadfastness during challenging times in government, particularly during his own tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives. He recalled how Buhari consistently supported the National Assembly and stayed true to his word, even in the face of political manoeuvres aimed at undermining the legislature.
“When these machinations became a distraction and I went to him, he assured me that only the national interests mattered to him and that as long as I continued to serve that interest, I would have his support. As was his nature, he remained true to his word and thoroughly resisted those attempts to sabotage the House,” Gbajabiamila stated.
He credited Buhari for helping ensure legislative stability during the 9th National Assembly, allowing the body to function as “a legislature of policy innovation dedicated to the service of the Nigerian people.” According to him, this contribution forms part of Buhari’s enduring legacy.
Gbajabiamila described the late President as a man of dignity, integrity, and tenacity. He acknowledged that although Buhari, like any human, was not without flaws, his actions were always guided by a profound love for Nigeria.
