Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Eric Chelle, has reacted to the suspension of winger Ademola Lookman ahead of the team’s final 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Benin Republic.
Lookman will miss the crucial encounter after receiving a yellow card in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Lesotho on Friday. The Atalanta star was booked in the 64th minute, marking his second yellow card of the qualifying series.
According to CAF regulations, any player who accumulates two yellow cards during the qualifiers is automatically suspended for the next game.
Chelle substituted Lookman in the 71st minute, bringing on Samuel Chukwueze as his replacement.
Addressing reporters after the match, the Malian coach dismissed concerns over the forward’s absence, stating that the team remains focused and confident.
“The team has enough depth to compete effectively despite the setback,” Chelle said. “While Lookman’s suspension is unfortunate, the squad possesses the character and determination to secure victory.”
He added that his side must concentrate on the players available and deliver a strong performance against Benin Republic.
The coach also said Lookman would continue to support his teammates from the sidelines as they push for qualification, emphasizing that every player must be mentally ready to contribute, whether starting or coming off the bench.
Chelle underlined the importance of maintaining focus and taking chances in the decisive fixture, reiterating his belief that Nigeria must seize control of their qualification destiny.
Nigeria currently sits third in Group C despite the win over Lesotho, with Benin Republic leading the group and South Africa in second place.
