Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has expressed confidence that Nigeria will improve as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations progresses, following their opening victory over Tanzania.

Nigeria began their AFCON campaign with a 2–1 win against the Taifa Stars on Tuesday, although the team had to work hard to secure all three points. The Super Eagles dominated possession for large spells of the encounter but were wasteful in front of goal, failing to convert several chances.

Tanzania also exposed gaps in Nigeria’s defence on a few occasions, making the contest more difficult than expected.

Reacting after the match, Ndidi said it was normal for teams to struggle in their opening fixture at a major tournament, stressing that the most important thing was getting a positive result.

“It was a good game. The first game of a tournament is always like this, about getting the momentum,” the Besiktas midfielder said. “It was really, really good that we got the three points, which is the most important thing.”

Nigeria will face Tunisia in their next group match as they continue their quest for continental glory at the tournament.
