The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), South West zone, has commended the Olu Omo of Ijebu-Igbo, High Chief Lawal Olawale Abinugbola, for his courageous and unwavering stand against the continuous and unlawful extortion by the Division Police Officer (DPO) of Topon Police Station, Ijebu Igbo and some other rogue police officers operating within the community.
The association in its appreciation made via its statement signed by the Secretary-General, Comrade Mubarak Olatunde Misbah, stated that the association firmly lends its voice in solidarity with High Chief Lawal Olawale Abinugbola’s relentless fight to end the illegal and exploitative activities targeting students.
He added, that these unlawful practices have turned the students’ community into a hotbed of harassment, intimidation, and extortion, with some police officers abusing their authority by subjecting students to forceful stop-and-search operations and coercing them into illegal payments under the guise of security checks.
NAPS Southwest zone has condemned the abuse of power and gross misconduct exhibited by these law enforcement agents, as such actions do not only violate the rights and dignity of innocent students but also undermine the trust and confidence that the public should have in the police as protectors of peace and order.
However, the association while recognised and celebrated the leadership qualities of the Chief Abinugbola a former Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, who also committed himself towards defending the interests and welfare of students and the wider community, adding that his proactive approach to standing against injustice and advocating for the rights of the masses is a testament to his dedication as a true leader and community advocate.
In its word of admonition to the traditional ruler, the association urged High Chief Abinugbola to remain steadfast and resolute in this noble cause despite any opposition he may face, with the belief that his efforts will inspire other leaders and stakeholders to join in the collective fight against corruption and extortion in all its forms. Indeed, as the association affirms, there is light at the end of the Titanic tunnel, and with persistent advocacy, justice and fairness will prevail.
Moreover, NAPS South West calls on all polytechnic students across the region to be law-abiding citizens and exemplary ambassadors of their educational institutions. Students are encouraged to uphold high standards of conduct, engage positively with authorities, and report any incidents of abuse or extortion to appropriate bodies. It is through collective responsibility and vigilance that a safer and more supportive academic environment can be fostered.
NAPS southwest, however remains committed to championing the rights and welfare of polytechnic students, and it pledges to work collaboratively with community leaders, law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, and other stakeholders to eliminate practices that threaten the safety and well-being of students.
