One person has died and three others sustained injuries following a road accident at Aiyetoro Junction in Epe, Lagos State, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.
The crash involved a truck laden with yams and a commercial tricycle. According to LASTMA, the truck, registered AGL 764 XB, was travelling from Ijebu-Ode when it attempted a U-turn toward Eleko and reportedly lost control, colliding violently with the stationary tricycle, registered SMK 127 QR.
“Preliminary findings reveal that the loaded truck coming from Ijebu-Ode attempted a U-turn inward Eleko at the junction when the driver reportedly lost control and violently rammed into a stationary tricycle. The devastating impact claimed one life and left three other occupants with severe injuries,” said LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, in a statement on Sunday.
LASTMA operatives, in coordination with the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and military personnel, responded promptly to the scene and extricated the injured victims from the wreckage. The deceased and injured were taken to the General Hospital, Epe, for medical attention. Security agencies also maintained order and restored traffic flow in the area.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. He called on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to hold anyone found culpable accountable.
The accident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in Lagos, particularly at busy junctions where commercial vehicles and tricycles operate in close proximity.
